James Gandolfini has died at age 51 of a massive heart attack in Italy.

While he’ll always be remembered as Tony Soprano (and rightfully so), it was his performance as General George Miller in “In The Loop” that really hammered home to me just how amazing he was at his craft. He effortlessly portrayed a surprisingly gentle warrior, whose sweetness is tinged with gallows humor and piercing wit with a steady undercurrent of frustration and general concern for the well-being of his country, his troops, and his friends. It’s a performance that stands out, even in such a brilliant satire that fires on all cylinders.

This is one of my favorite scenes in a movie ever, period, and while it’s conceptually brilliant, Gandolfini’s execution is what really makes it shine.
